| Academic Vocabulary |
The process we are using to teach academic vocabulary is based on work by Robert Marzano and outlined in his book “Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement – Research on What Works in Schools” The 6 Steps for Vocabulary Instruction are based on eight research-based characteristics of effective vocabulary instruction.
• Descriptions as opposed to definitions
• Use of linguistic and nonlinguistic representations
• Gradual shaping of word meanings
• Teaching and using word parts
• Different types of instruction for different types of words
• Students interacting about the words they are learning
• Use of games
• Focus on terms important to academic subjects
To begin, each department developed a list of 20 specific academic terms and
phrases to be taught throughout the year, so when a student leaves that grade,
he/she will have a strong common foundation for academic background knowledge.
This will be done in a 6-step process: Step 1 – Teacher gives the word
and a description or example of the word. Step 2 – The student gives a
description or example of the new term in his/her own words. Step 3 –
The student draws a picture or symbol to represent the new term. Step 4 –
Students provide more knowledge of the words on their Academic Vocabulary Sheets.
Step 5 – The students come up with an agreed upon class definition. Step
6 – Students participate in games that provide more reinforcement of the
new term.
